About: About

National Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu Fraternity was founded in 1869 at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia by three cadets in a period of civil strife known as the Reconstruction. Sigma Nu's history is something that sets it apart from many other chapters. The physical abuse and hazing of underclassmen at VMI led James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley to form the "Legion of Honor” which soon became Sigma Nu Fraternity. Sigma Nu still stands by the values that we were founded upon to this day.

Sigma Nu currently has over 160 active chapters and colonies on college campuses throughout the United States and has initiated over 235,000 members since its founding. Sigma Nu enhances the experience of its members and builds a sense of community in a way that generates a desire to invest time, talent, and treasure in the development of both the organization and the future of its members. This is recognized by all as a contribution to the greater good of Sigma Nu and society as a whole.
